Input is currently being reviewed and a decision will be made in March, 2009
Some potential changes to the water levels on the Whitefish Chain are forthcoming that will affect many property owners and navigation of the waters on the Whitefish Chain. Since many property owners live outside the area, you may have little or no knowledge of the proposed changes. The Corps of Engineers is proposing from a study they have done supporting it, lowering the water level on the Whitefish Chain as early as July 15 in an effort to promote more marine life and vegetation for the lakes. They would continue to lower the levels much earlier.
Points of Concern with the Proposed Changes
- Lower water level in many shallower parts of the lakes.
- Difficulty navigating some of the channels.
- Possible impact on property values and tax base.
- Shortening of the tourist season affecting local businesses.
Everyone owning property should be concerned about these proposed changes and needs to contact the people who are influential in this action. In an effort to help keep people informed, I will post the latest information on this proposed change on my web site. Unless interested parties take action, we may find ourselves with lower water levels in mid summer. Every voice is needed to stop this proposed change.
Let's all unite and make our lakes the best place to be in the Brainerd Lakes area by having the water levels that our tourists, property owners, and buyers can continue to expect.
Thank you for your help in this campaign to keep the current operating plan.
